De vloedgolf die door de instorting van de Krakatau-groep aan het eind van de uitbarsting van 1883 ontstond, overstroomde de kusten van Java en Sumatra. In Straat Sunda was de golf wel 20 meter hoog. Duizenden mensen kwamen daarbij jammerlijk om het leven.
The tidal wave which arose by the collapse of the Krakatau group at the end of the eruption of 1883 overflowed the coasts of Java and Sumatra. In the Sunda Strait the wave was 20 meters high. Thousands of people came thereby to a pitiful end.
